Dear M,

You believe in marriage, preferably one that lasts a lifetime. Your mom and dad were together for forty-five years until she died. You’ve always dreamed of having a marriage like that and having five children.

It didn’t happen that way.

Your story is different. You have three children whom you love with all your heart. However, your marriages didn’t work.

You know how sometimes one gets a feeling you’re not meant to go down a certain path, and you either listen to your instincts or stay?

You listened and fled after several months each time. They were abusive and you knew your life would be a mess if you stayed. If you had stayed, you wouldn’t be where you are now in your life. You wouldn’t have found your love for writing. Strange, looking back, and thinking how long each marriage lasted for you. Where would you have been?

You didn’t leave your marriages for you. You left for the sake of your children. If you have stayed, they wouldn’t be where they are now, successful. You believe that in your heart.

You just haven’t met your soulmate yet, but you know he’s out there and when the time is right, it will happen.

You have no regrets, just memories you’d rather forget. Although your dream has been to have a long marriage, leaving saved your life, and your kids.

Be you, M. Never change for anyone.

M.
